Mario Valera, Daniel Adrover and Eva Aguilar, members of the I+DElab laboratory, have published an article in the journal “Language, Society and Culture”, entitled “Social variables as a risk factor, protection factors and consequent difficulties in language: a holistic vision”.
Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is defined as a persistent language difficulty that affects people’s lives with it. Among the most common risk and protection factors for this disorder are gender, prematurity, or a possible genetic load. However, there is also another set of social factors that are related to DLD. These social variables include family, socio-cultural and economic elements that significantly affect the quality and quantity of the linguistic stimulation that the child receives and influence the acquisition of language and its development. This article addresses, from a holistic and integrative perspective, the set of these variables, their operation as risk factors and protection against DLD and their impact on the disorder.
